The demigod Hercules, son of Zeus and a mortal woman named Alcmene, is one of the most recognizable characters in Greek mythology. Hercules' wild adventures have been recorded in various modes of art, literature, and even film throughout the centuries. This Hercules silver round series commemorates the 12 labors that Hercules was ordered to complete as penance for slaying his family in a fit of madness caused by the goddess Hera. For the tenth labor, King Eurystheus ordered Hercules to bring him back the red cattle belonging to the three-headed, six-legged monster, Geryon. Geryon lived on an island called Erythia, and he kept his herd carefully guarded by the monster Orthus, a two-headed hound. Orthus was the brother of another famous beast, Cerberus, guardian of the underworld. After bashing Orthus with his club, Hercules killed Geryon and escaped with his giant herd of cattle. Bringing the entire herd back to Greece proved to be the most difficult part of the task, as he had to fend off thieves who tried to steal the cattle and gather the herd back after Hera caused them to scatter. Finally, Hercules was able to bring the herd all the way to Eurystheus, who then sacrificed the herd to the goddess Hera. The obverse of the round displays a profile portrait of Hercules, wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, whom he killed during his first labor. Inscriptions include the weight and purity of the round.Featured on the reverse of the round is the imposing monster Geryon, wielding swords and spears. His herd of red cattle appears in the background. Inscriptions include “CATTLE OF GERYON", as well as "X", the Roman numeral for ‘10’.Released June 12, 2015
