Leave window coverings, such as blinds or curtains, open as much as possible. Water sparingly. Queen palm roots rot in waterlogged soil. They prefer a free-draining potting compost, and water should run freely from the bottom of the pot. Stand the pot on pot feet on a tray so that excess water doesn't pool around the roots. Reduce watering in winter when palms stop growing. Fertilize queen palms in early spring and again in summer, applying a general purpose indoor plant fertilizer at a rate of one tablespoon per gallon of water, or according to manufacturers' instructions. Plants suffering from frayed leaves may have a manganese deficiency. Symptoms appear on older leaves first, then spread through the canopy. Scatter half a pound of manganese sulfate on the soil surface. Protect palms from cold temperatures. The lowest temperature queen palms can tolerate is 20 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Move queen palms growing in conservatories or unheated indoor areas to frost-free rooms if temperatures fall below freezing. Alternatively, wrapping pots in bubble wrap, newspaper or similar material helps protect roots. Check queen palms regularly for signs of disease. Pink rot affects many indoor queen palms. Symptoms include rotting trunks, leaf tips and leaf bases. Pink patches and brown liquid may also be seen. Avoid removing leaves until they fall off naturally to help prevent disease, and provide suitable growing conditions to avoid stressing plants. When grown indoors, a queen palm in a container is sure to lend the room an elegant, tropical feel.
