Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1676 "FREE CITY" of HAMBURG in GERMANY Silver "SHILLING" Choice & FULLY ORIGINAL Description This is a very scarce, more so in this condition, silver, “Schilling” or “1/48 Thaler” from the “Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg”. It was struck at the Hamburg mint in 1676 by the mint official Hermann Lüders who served from 1673 until 1692. Hamburg was founded by the first "Holy Roman Emperor", Charlemagne, in the ninth century. In 1241 it joined with Lübeck to form the "Hanseatic League" and with Bremen continued in that hereditary, oligarchic, organization until the "League" ended in 1862. Officially an "Imperial Free City", it eventually became a part of the German Empire in 1871. It struck city coins almost continually from about 1250 until World War I put an end to the "German Empire". A little-known historical oddity: In 1676, this year, Ireland, yes Ireland, sent “Foreign Aid” to America. The “Massachusetts Bay Colony” was in the midst of “King Phillips War” against the native Americans and Ireland sent a shipload of food and other goods on board the “Katherine”. In 1848, during the “Great Famine”, Massachusetts repaid the debt by sending the “USS Jamestown” full of food, back to Ireland. Weight: 1.04 Grams, 19 Millimeters, Silver. Mintage: Unknown. "Standard Catalog of World Coins" (1601-1700) by Krause-Mishler. #269. Obverse: HL • HAMBURGER • HL for mint official Hermann Lüders. • City Arms in palm branches, showing a three-towered castle with a portcullised gate in the center. The gate symbolizes the city's determination to defend itself. • It has been on the coinage of Hamburg since at least 1241. Reverse: STADT • GELDT • State money. • 1676 •/• 48 in palm branches. The Coin: A scarce coin to begin with and still in choice condition. It shows very little, if any, wear and that is still original luster. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself. Remember, FREE SHIPPING to the USA!
