Description: Item #CC-0390 | 1711 Lima 2 Escudos from the 1715 Fleet Shipwreck AU DetailsMint: Lima, PeruAssayer: “M” for Cristóbal Cano MelgarejoRuler/Period: King Philip VGrade: NGC AU Details Description: This is an exceptional surviving example of a Lima 2 escudos recovered off the shipwreck sites of the 1715 Fleet. The Lima escudos from the “Fleet Era” are very rare and arguably the most desirable of the gold coins recovered. Struck on a very well rounded planchet and nearly perfectly centered, this 2 escudos is a choice example! Complete with much of the intended details from the die, and only missing the better part of the legend, this specimen is a great example. The planchet has a slight bend in the bottom left of the obverse likely from the heavy strike, or possibly from being tossed around in a treasure chest during that fateful night 300 years ago! While many examples of the Mexico 2 escudos denominations were recovered from the 1715 Plate Fleet shipwreck, relatively few minted in Lima were recovered, making this type highly sought after.
