Description: 1744 Engraved Portrait Print of King Louis XV & Minerva After Le Brun - - - DESCRIPTION & CONDITION:Louis XV became king of France in 1715, succeeding his great-grandfather Louis XIV at the age of five. His grand-uncle Philippe II, Duke of Orleans, acted as Regent until Louis reached age 13 in 1722, but even after Louis officially took the throne his uncle continued to maintain control. After the Duke’s death in 1723 the Duke of Bourbon, as Prime Minister, exerted control of the government, followed upon his death in 1726 by Cardinal Fleury also acting as Prime Minister. After the Cardinal died in 1743 Louis dispensed with Prime Ministers and took sole control of France himself. This portrait, dated 1744, is basically a reissue of a famous print of a portrait of King Louis XIV held by the goddess Minerva, with Louis XV inserted in the oval frame in his place, perhaps symbolically, if unofficially, celebrating the young King’s finally taking sole possession of the government. Signed in the plate by Coypel (Antoine Coypel, 1661-1722, a French history painter connected to the original Louis XIV portrait) and Tardieu filius (Jacques-Nicolas Tardieu, called "Tardieu fils" or "Tardieu the younger", 1716-1791, a French engraver). The oval portrait of the king is signed in the plate by Tardieu and “M. Le Brun” (Charles Le Brun, court painter to Louis XIV). Engraved print. 6.75x8.75. Trimmed closely, with mounting tabs on the back corners. Minor soil and light wear.
