Description: Observations on the Inslaving, Importing and Purchasing of Negroes; with some advice thereon, extracted from the Epistle of the Yearly-meeting of the People called Quakers, held in London in the Year 1748. By [Anthony Benezet.] Germantown [Pennsylvania]: Printed by Christopher Sower. 1760. Stated second edition. Complete, 11 pages. Paginated continuously with a separate work, The Uncertainty of Death-Bed Repentance (pp. 12-14) which is lacking final leaf. Also bound with: The Way to the Sabbath of Rest. Or the Soul’s Progress of the New-Birth etc. Germantown: Christopher Sower, 1759. 280 pp. complete [and] A Discourse on Mistakes Concerning Religion, Enthusiasm, Experiences, &c. By Thomas Hartley. Germantown: Sower, 1759; 168 pp. complete [and] The Uncertainty of Death-Bed Repentance, illustrated under the Character of Penitens. [3 pp. of 5, lacking one leaf] These works are typically found bound together, apparently by the publisher, Sower, but only rarely are they accompanied by the anti-Slavery tract. Bound in period leather. Original owner’s inscription to endpaper: “Benjamin Mendinhall/his Book/August 14,1759.” Also another inscription by the same person noting the price paid for the book: £4 [?]. Overall good condition, title page of Observations on the Inslaving, Importing and Purchasing of Negroes has been re-sewn into textblock with a stitch of catgut, apparently an early repair. Observations on the Inslaving, Importing and Purchasing of Negroes is one of earliest and most important anti-slavery tracts printed in America before the Revolutionary War. The author, Anthony Benezet (1713-1784) was a leading Quaker abolitionist, founder of the Negro School at Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Abolition Society [Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage], the first American anti-slavery society. An important collection of early Americana.
