Description: 1785 Connecticut Copper, African Head, Miller 4.1-F.4, PCGS XF45, ex Eliasberg. An outstanding example of this significant Connecticut copper type, thought to be one of the earliest varieties struck. Surfaces are just slightly granular under a glossy patina of medium and dark olive-brown. Desirable early die state with sharp legends and a full, bold date - something so hard to find on this type. Overall excellent definition including fine detail on the effigy's hair and mailing, as well as the seated figure's drapery and vine detail on the shield. Faint traces of dark attribution ink on each side, a "4" in the right obv field and "F" in the left rev field. Wonderful provenance to arguably the greatest U.S. coin collection of all time in Eliasberg, and the greatest Connecticut copper collection of all time in Syd Martin.
