Bewick was the author of natural history works, including 'A History of British Birds', and an engraver. He was apprenticed and eventually became the partner to Ralph Beilby.Bookplate of George Venables Vernon, Baron of Kinderton, to the front paste down, with the ink signature of the Dowager Lady Vernon to the head. George was the 2nd Baron Vernon of Kinderton, a Whig member of parliament who was once painted by Thomas Gainsborough.Ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, 'Edward Vernon Harbord, given him by his grandmother Lady Vernon, September 19th 1721'. Harbord was the 3rd Baron Suffield, a liberal politician, prison reformer, and anti-slavery campaigner. CONDITION In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. A little loss to the head of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Surface cracks to the spine. Front joint is starting but firm. Crack to the head of the rear joint. Boards and spine are rubbed. Small mark to the front board. Discolouration to the joints and extremities of the boards. Small chips to the spine label. Front hinge is strained but remains firm. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Bookplate and ink inscription to both the front paste down and the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots. Ink inscription to the head of the title.
