Description: Antique Original Gaucho Cowboy Belt. Silver and 14k Gold. Gun Holster. South America. The Buckles and chains are solid silver embedded with thick 14k (tested) gold plates for decoration. Engraved BRE. The belt has been lengthened from the original size to fit a bigger person. Its 43" from snap to snap. The Holster threading is starting to come loose. There is a faint signature on the inside of the belt but I cant make it out. Thiswould polish up really well if you wanted to. I left the patina on it incase somebody prefers it that way. Who were the Gauchos? The gauchos were a type of horsemen who worked at herding livestock across territories in the Americas. The gauchos flourished from the mid-18th until the mid-19th century. They were predominantly located in the pampas (grasslands) of Argentina, Uruguay, and the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The gauchos of this region had many similarities with the cowboys of North America, known as vaqueros in Spanish. (The English word "buckaroo" comes from vaquero, and many of them were of Mexican descent or formerly enslaved African American people.) Other examples of horse-mounted cowhands during the same era included the llaneros of Colombia and Venezuela, Chilean huasos, and the Mexican vaqueros and charros. As the lands in the Americas came under increasing private ownership by the late 19th century, the practice of fencing off lands made the work of gauchos and other cowhands obsolete. While the era of the gauchos (and other cowboys) was relatively brief, their lifestyle and lore have become an essential patrimony of the lands where they used to roam.
