He was born on the family property of Las Cases, in the commune of Blan in the Tarn, near Revel in Haute-Garonne. At the age of 14, he learned of the suicide of his father, François-Hyacinthe de Las Cases, driven mad by a war wound to his left eye. The French Revolution of 1789 caused his emigration, and he spent several years in Germany and England, participating in the disaster of the Quiberon expedition (1795). He returned to London, where he lived in poverty. He did, however, manage to get himself hired as tutor to the children of Lady Clavering, a lady of French origin from the Angers region. He considered writing novels for a while but decided on history, and so he composed a monumental Historical Atlas in large folio (55×34 cm), which he published under the assumed name of Le Sage. Augmented with historical notices, the work was republished in Paris and reprinted several times between 1804 and 1845 approximately.
