Nos. 1 - 12; September 1885 - August 1886. 520 pp, 11 x 7.5", 4to. In poor condition. As is. Half-leather marbled binding normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at leather corners. Head and tail of spine scuffed; title label chipped around edges & gilt lettering moderately dulled. Probable glue residue stain found at top corner of front end-page. Front fly-leaf & title page lacking approximately bottom third of leaf - publisher info lacking. Pencil marginalia at top edge of title page. Pages i-vi lacking (Index Letters A-R). Normal age-related toning throughout text-block with instances of age-staining. Many illustrations are hand-colored with blue, orange, green, yellow, & red (some illustrations have been left b&w). Binding broken between pages 240-241; one piece of cording intact at tail. Ink stain found at fore-edge of pages 219 - 250, approximately. Some instances of pencil marginalia throughout text-block. Binding broken. Please see photos. The American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge (1834-1837) was a monthly magazine based in Boston, Massachusetts. It was established by a group of engravers (including namesake Thomas Bewick) to "give the public a work descriptive, not merely of subjects, scenes, places, and persons existing in such climes, but also of those which are to be found in our own fine and native country." It featured profusely illustrated articles on many topics, including American animals, plants, natural scenery, colleges, banks, hospitals, churches, cities, technology, and so on; as well as biographical articles on figureheads of the revolutionary and federal eras. Modeled after the British Penny Magazine, it was published first by Boston Bewick Company, then by William D. Ticknor and John L. Sibley. In 1836, Nathaniel Hawthorne served as editor. Vol. II ONLY!
