Description: 1837 Feuchtwanger's Composition Cent PCGS AU Detail Nice High Grade Example! Description A very nice looking PCGS AU Detail 1837 Feutchwanger's Composition Cent with meaty AU detail and a pleasing patina from light circulation. PCGS determined the coin was "tooled" apparently due to a fairly innocuous scratch on the obverse below the eagle's wing. The coin has a very cool history: In 1837, to alleviate the need for small change during the Hard Times, Feuchtwanger created tokens made of Argentan (commonly known as "German silver"), an alloy made of copper, nickel, zinc, tin, and trace metals. It was cheaper to produce than the extraction of copper for the US minted half-cents and cents.
