Description: Beautiful letter written by Andrew French of Mt. Pleasant, PA, home to his sister Benjaline in Bucks County. The first few paragraphs consist of Andrew’s musings on the coming of fall; the last few - which are much less poetic - deal with the practicalities of having a new vest made. It reads: Dear Benjaline, The wind of autumn is careering boisterously around the school house, of which I am now the solitary occupant; and by the light of my lamp, am busily penning this scrawl, which I hope will duly find its way to that place to all others preferable. The appearance of the weather would indicate a storm; and, as it is near the autumnal equinox I should not be surprised if this brewing would make something. Well, the season for the scar and yellow leaf, the fading flower, the withered grass, the melancholy winds, and all its other sober scenes is come; but it brings with it the trees laden with fruit, the crops for the winter safely housed, and the still and sober evening so inviting to the contemplative mind; it has its beauties as well as the [?] vigor giving spring. Tis strange to think that this is the routine of duties for the majority of mankind; in the spring, summer and fall, to prepare for winter, and when winter is over, the same path must be trodden again, we surely are most of us employed in preparation, and often, very often, the contingency for which we have prepared never arrives, and we have our labor for our pains, but still we go on making ready for something else; hope still pointing the way to a haven where all our toils shall be repaid, but which we, most likely, are fated never to reach. I write this time rather earlier than usual on account of a vest which I have lying ready cut at Mr. Himmelwright’s; and of which I thought best to inform you; as, if it should suit Julia better to make it before I come home again than after, and she should have an opportunity to send for it, she might get it, though I do not care much about having it made until after I have been at home next time. I told Mr. H. that if father called he should let him have it. Mr. H. says the stuff (plush) is hard to sew, it being of the nature of velvet, and if Julia would not like to make it on that account I will get him to make it also. He says the pockets are to be made the same way that the last summer vest was made, but the vest is to be made plain having no cord or binding. There is a little notch cut at the lower part in front, at the extremity of which she will see a button hole marked, and where a button and a button hole are to be placed, but of course never used. He also says that it ought to be wadded, but if Julia is not acquainted with the wadding, she may let it out. If she will make it, and if it should not [?] her before or she should not get it, I will bring it when I come home next time. I am as well as usual, and hope you are all enjoying good health.
