Description: A FASCINATING MID 1800's BOOK ON THE PLANETS AND MOONCONTEMPLATIONS ON THE SOLAR SYSTEMBy J.P. Nichol1844 Edinburgh Edition rebound in buckram; 16 plates, some colored, 1 foldout. VG condition. Description: J.P. Nichol CONTEMPLATIONS ON THE SOLAR SYSTEM (second edition) Edinburgh:William Tate, 1844, 5.5 x 8.5 in., 219 pp. 16 plates, some colored, 1 foldout of the planets. A few black-and-white diagrams. Condition: Rebound in new maroon buckram with gilt title on spine and new endpapers. One plate loose but present. Most plates have tissue guards, but the tissue guard for the full-page moon map is sticking at one side (see photo) and I haven't tried to remove it. Some light foxing to a few of the plates , and a couple of the colored plates are a bit faded (see photos). Otherwise quite clean, very securely bound, and unmarked. Overall a VG copy with some unusual plates. Information: An attractive and interestingly illustrated book on the planets, moon, and comets by a noted popular astronomy writer of the mid-1800s. Interesting because it was written just before the discovery (in 1846) of Neptune, so only the planets out to Uranus were known. Summarizes the discovery history of the solar system and the characteristics of the planets. Chapter and section titles include: PART I: The Survey of the Exterior: Imperfect Vision; The Insight of Copernicus; PART II: The Finding of the Key: The Search for the Key-Tycho and Kepler; The Key Found-Gravitation; The Comets-Hints for the Future; PART III: Glimpses of the Interior: Conditions Common to All the Planets; Individual Characteristics; The Constitution of the Moon; The Constitution of the Sun; The Inter-Planetary Spaces; NOTES: Relations of Planets and Satellites to the Light--Phases; Seasons; Eclipses; The Idea of a Solar Anemometer; Speculation in Climatology; The New Comet.Highly informative and attractive work that will merits a place in any library on astronomy, astrophysics, history of science, planets, moon, Mars, , etc. Biographical Note: John Pringle Nichol FRSE FRAS (1804 – 1859) was a Scottish educator, phrenologist, astronomer and economist who did much to popularise astronomy in a manner that appealed to nineteenth century tastes. Born at Huntly Hill, near Brechin, Angus, Nichol was the son of a gentleman farmer and was educated at the local grammar school and then studied mathematics and natural philosophy (physics) at King's College, University of Aberdeen. He then changed to study divinity. He was licensed as a preacher and became a highly effective communicator, but the impact of phrenological thinking led him to abandon the Church for education. In 1836 and in competition with Thomas Carlyle, Nichol was appointed Regius Professor of Astronomy at the University of Glasgow. He became an enthusiastic and effective lecturer and made a profound impression on William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin with his introduction of the "Continental" approach to mathematical physics of Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier. He lived at the Glasgow Observatory.Nichol turned to popular lecturing and authored a number of popular and successful books about astronomy, especially championing the nebular hypothesis.
