Description: This is an issue that, in our opinion, is criminally underrated, far and away the rarest gold dollar from the 'Nawlins Mint. In fact, its comparable in scarcity to the 1850 Charlotte and Dahlonega issues, at less than half of the price. The mintage figure for that year is a paltry 14,000 coins, compared to 215,000 in 1849 and 290,000 in 1851. If you were putting together a type set, the 50-O is an excellent value combination of scarcity and historical significance. With a pleasing natural yellow gold color, this example is hammered and shows virtually no weakness in the centers. The smallest hint of wear keeps this from a mint state grade, which makes this coin a fantastic value-buy as a CAC approved AU-58. A few well-placed, inconspicuous contact marks can be easily overlooked, and a tiny snake bite on the neck is noted for identification purposes. Without putting the coin under glass, these tiny disturbances are unlikely to catch your eye. The luster is sufficient for the grade, and some traces of dirt in the recess of the devices serve as a testament of originality. We purchased this coin in late August directly from GC for the sum of $3,105, and believe that a modest markup does nothing to hinder the value provided by such an underappreciated coin in a very desirable grade, offered at an easy-to-stomache price.
