Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE VISION: or HELL, PURGATORY, AND PARADISE OF DANTE ALIGHIERI Translated by The Rev Henry Francis Cary With the Life of Dante, Chronological View of his Age, Additional Notes and Index Illustrated with Twelve Engravings from Designs by John Flaxman From the Last Corrected London Edition published by D Appleton & Co., New York, in 1852. Dante Alighieri began his epic narrative poem, "Divine Comedy", c.1308 and completed it around 1321 shortly before his death. It is widely considered to be the pre-eminent work of Italian literature, and one of the greatest works of Western literature. This edition includes a full-page tissue-guarded b/w portrait of Dante on the frontispiece with 12 full-page tissue-guarded b/w illustrations. The previous owner has left a piece of paper in the book with a note that says "Cary's translation of Dante with Flaxman Illustrations - A wedding anniversary gift from J C Drake to his wife. Contains a piece of her wedding dress", and there is a rectangular piece of ivory fabric contained in the paper.Red leather boards with a blind stamped decorative design with gilt lettering and gilt decoration on the spine. Minor marks and slight wear to edges of the boards. Vertical split to the leather on the spine with tears at the top. Red page edges. Browning to endpapers and foxing to pages. Front hinge cracked but all pages are firm and the book is in very good condition. 587 pages. 17 x 12 cm.We have over 2000 items in our Ebay shop on a range of subjects, so please feel free to have a browse and see if anything else takes your fancy.
