Description: THE AMERICAN ANNUAL CYCLOPAEDIA And Registry of Important Events FOR THE YEAR 1871 EMBRACING POLITICAL, CIVIL, MILITARY AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS; PUBLIC DOCUMENTS; BIOGRAPHY, STATISTICS, COMMERCE, FINANCE, LITERATURE, SCIENCE, AGRICULTURE AND MECHANICAL INDUSTRY VOLUME XI 1872 First Edition D. APPLETON AND COMPANY NEW YORK BOUND IN LEATHER 811 pages The Annual Cyclopedia was an American yearbook covering the years 1861–1902 by the New York publisher D. Appleton & Company. It was a comprehensive yearbook of events, obituaries and statistics, worldwide, with many articles written by experts, some of them signed. It was originally sold as an annual supplement to the New American Cyclopedia in 16 volumes, edited by George Ripley and Charles Anderson Dana, 1857–1863. When that encyclopedia was enlarged as American Cyclopedia (1873–1876), the Cyclopedia started a new series. Topics are covered alphabetically, not chronologically, and every State in the U.S. gets some degree of coverage. Some topics are very specific (ie; Congregationalists) while others are very general (ie; Congress of the United States). While we can't list every topic, or even every interesting topic, we can point out some things of interest in this volume. Steel-engraved portrait of Charles Francis Adams, Sr. (1807-1886), American historical editor, writer, politician, and diplomat.William H. Seward (1801-1869), American politician who served as United States Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869, and earlier served as governor of New York and as a United States Senator. Marie Joseph Louis Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877), a French statesman and historian. He was the second elected President of France and first President of the French Third Republic. Also two maps of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). Of course there is more but you can discover for yourself after you purchase the book. This book is ex-library with some of the usual and some unusual markings, listed below. Hard to find one of these individually; they often appear combined with other annual volumes in expensive lots.
