1883 Literary World: Emile Zola, Providence Libraries, John Esten Cooke, Cooper

Description: Now rare single issue for 10 February 1883 of Boston's The Literary World is in good condition. A little faint soiling to the very tip of the lower right margin only of the first few pages. See photo. See photo #2 for complete contents. 19 pages. Some highlights I find include: Virginia novelist and writer and Confederate Civil War officer (on the staff of J.E.B. Stuart, among other assignments) John Esten Cooke (1830-1886) is profiled in the "World Biographies" feature of this issue followed by an important "Bibliography" of his works dating from 1854 in book form, and in other forms, magazines, newspapers, etc. This list includes, of course, his biographical works on the Civil War, on General Lee, Stonewall Jackson, etc. About a full page and 1/2 article on "The Private Libraries of Providence [Rhode Island]" focusing on the John Carter Brown collection and some few other book gatherings. French author Emile Zola gets this treatment (in part) in a review of his In the Whirlpool: "If the title...were to read In the Cesspool, it would more accurately define the character of the work." And later, "The descent to bestiality is complete." More than a full page review of T.R. Lounsbury's new biography of James Fenimore Cooper. Almost a full page review of Memoir of John A. Dahlgren, Rear Admiral, United States Navy by his widow Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren. A review of English author Cotter Morison's new volume on the life and good work of T.B. Macaulay. A bibliography of Rhode Island author and scholar George Washington Greene (1811-1883). Numerous other reviews and articles, reports, book news, etc.
