Description: Uncommon, complete issue of the weekly London Athenaeum for 6 October 1888 is in very good condition. This one deftly salvaged by me the other day from an old damaged bound volume of the journal. See photo #2 for table of contents. 17 pages. Some highlights I've spotted include: A long, opening feature essay on the completion of the first volume, and the beginning of the second volume, of the famous J.A.H. Murray-edited New English Dictionary on Historical Principles. Near two full pages of detail on the famous Eruption of Krakatoa and Subsequent Phenomena (Indonesia) published by the English Krakatoa Committee of the Royal Society, a document almost impossible to find today in its original format. A long review of the performance of Gilbert & Sullivan's new two-act opera The Yeoman of the Guard at the Savoy Theatre in London and another review of W.S. Pinero's The Weaker Sex, starring Mrs. Kendal at the Theatre Royale in Manchester. The able English scholar A.H. Bullen's new volume on the works of 16th century author and playwright George Peele is reviewed. A long essay on volume seven of Gaston de Fresne de Beaucourt's Histoire de [15th Century French King] Charles VII. Reviews of new novels by author and critic William Minto (The Mediation of Ralph Hardelot) and of Mrs. Henry Wood's The Story of Charles Strange, among other new works. Notice of the "lamented death" of English priest, traveler, soldier and Arabist William Gifford Palgrave.
