Description: The Wandering Jew by Eugene Sue (1889)Complete in Three Volumes Marie-Joseph "Eugène" Sue (1804 - 1857) is credited with inventing the widely-imitated "city mystery" genre with his novel The Mysteries of Paris (1842-1845). He followed it up with a globe-trotting novel mixed with some fantastical elements, The Wandering Jew, involving an ancient curse, numerous characters in family a spread around the globe, and nefarious Jesuit spies. His novels were among the first to be published serially and became immensely popular. This large, profusely illustrated three-volume set was printed by George Routledge and Sons, New York and London, in 1888. It is bound in cloth with rough cut pages. These three volumes are in fair-to-good condition for age. The green fabric covers are nice with some wear especially at the heads/tails of the spines. The bindings are tight and the inner and outer hinges sturdy. The pages are unevenly bound as was frequent for the times. The pages are of thicker stock and the books are quite heavy. Generally, the pages are in good condition with no tears or dog ears. There is some moisture warping to the covers, especially volume III, and light moisture stains along the lower right of most pages of volume III as shown in the last 2 pictures. These books are oversized, each measures 11 inches by 8 inches and weighs about 4 3/4 pounds.
