Description: The Strike At Arlingford: Play in Three Acts by George Moore London: Walter Scott, Limited, 24 Warwick Lane 1893 gold gilt upper page edges with gold gilt decorative detailing to the board and spine ( with wear to the gilt and to the maroon leather) A socialist play with early features of social realism. George Moore was also known for his book on "Modern Painting" published the same year. Moore's play, 'The Strike at Arlingford', was first staged at London's Independent Theatre. The play was the outcome of a challenge between Moore and George Robert Sims, widely publicised in newspapers. As a response to Moore's criticism of contemporary playwrights in his 1891 book 'Impressions and Opinions', Sims said he would give £100 if Moore would write an "unconventional" play for the Independent Theatre. From the preface: "In my own conception of my play the labour dispute is an externality to which I attach little importance. What I applied myself to in the composition of "The Strike at Arlingford" was the development of a moral idea. I leave the play itself to explain this idea."
