Description: Trans-Mississippi Exposition Omaha, so-called dollar HK 283, struck in brass with gold gilding. It is 34 mm, 16.9 gms. The piece was struck in the Mint Exhibit at the Exposition, from dies made at the Philadelphia Mint. The Exposition suffered in attendance and exhibit participation because it was overlapping the same time that the Spanish-American War began. The obverse shows a female head to the left, described as a composite picture "...of the most beautiful women in the Trans-Mississippi country". The reverse shows a mounted Indian, spearing a buffalo. The obverse legend shows "TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPOSITION OMAHA 1898". On the reverse the date 1848, is at the bottom, below the buffalo. The obverse shows a spot of dark toning on the neck of the woman, and in the field just behind the hair bun. The reverse has a small area of slightly dark toning behind the Indian, and on the hindquarter of the horse. The piece retains virtually all of its original gold coating, with only light handling contact.
