Description: Card mounted photograph (photograph just over 7” by 9 ¼”) of a yacht at a regatta, probably in Narragansett Bay near Newport, Rhode Island, by Willis A. Dean of Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1900s. The photograph is signed W.A. Dean at the bottom left corner of the mount. The untitled view shows a sailing yacht racing past a small steamship with other vessels behind them and buildings lining the distant shore. Many of the ships are decorated with flags and likely are participating in a regatta or perhaps the America’s Cup yacht race. The yacht featured here looks like a racing yacht but has no insignia or markings on its sails. I suspect the owner of the vessel commissioned Dean to take this photograph. Born in Patterson, New York, Willis A. Dean (1850-1928) was working as a photographer in Providence by 1900, at which time he was boarding in a hotel on Westminster Street. He is listed in the 1906 Providence City Directory, with his studio located in the Board of Trade Building. Dean became the staff photographer for Western New England magazine in 1910. I think this is a silver bromide photograph. The mount has been trimmed down from a larger size, but the photograph is not affected. The photograph is in good condition with light wear and soiling. There is some foxing and staining on the image. A nice early Rhode Island and racing yacht photograph!
