1910-1920's SCHRAFFT'S ORIENTAL RUG CANCO TIN CANDY CONTAINER, VERY ORNATE

Description: An unusual, & attractive Schrafft's tin candy container lidded box with an ornate oriental rug design. The Schrafft's candy name is on the center front panel of the box. Schrafft's was founded as a candy company by William F. Schrafft in Boston, in 1861. Frank Shattuck took over in 1898, expanding the company to include restaurants. By 1915, they had nine stores in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn, and one in Syracuse, NY as well as the facility in Boston. They had grown to 22 stores in 1923, 42 stores in 1934, and 55 stores in 1968. We are estimating that this tin dates circa 1910-1920's. But, we are not precisely certain. The tin box measures 9 1/4 inches long by 5 3/4 inches wide by 2 3/4 inches tall. The lid lifts off entirely to reveal the gold flashed interior. The lid is as made & is not hinged. The interior, as well as the exterior, is fresh & clean & shows only tiny signs of wear. The tin is impressed in the base with the tin maker's name "Canco" in an oval. The tin has a few tiny bends & small spots of wear at the corners & edges. But, overall, the tin is in superb, bright, fresh, & beautiful condition. This is really an outstanding example that would be hard to improve on condition-wise. This item is inventory #5577.
