Description: 1912 Zeenut - Jimmy Shinn, Pacific Coast League, Sacramento Sacts - SGC 4 On the Player - Jimmy Shinn played in the Western minor leagues from 1906 to 1917 and was recognized as one of the top hitters in the Pacific Coast League during several of those years. He competed alongside future Major League players such as Chick Gandil, Joe Nealon, Harry Hooper, Harry Wolter, Happy Smith, and Orth Collins. Although Shinn never made it to the Major Leagues himself, he was offered a tryout with the Boston Red Sox in 1912. According to the back of his 1911 card: "Shinn, one of the smallest infielders in the League, plays sensational ball at third base. He is considered one of the fastest, cleverest, and most daring base-runners on the Coast. He excels at getting on base and is among the best run-getters in the league. He swings the bat with power and precision." Shinn concluded his career in 1917 with Salt Lake City, amassing over 1,500 hits in the minor leagues. On the Card - This card is the only graded example for Shinn in the 1912 set, and one of the highest graded examples for any 1912 Zeenut card in either the PSA or SGC registries. Zeenut, comprising popcorn, peanuts, and coconut coated in syrup, incorporated baseball cards from 1911 to 1938 as a marketing strategy. Jefferson Burdick's American Card Catalogue categorized the sets issued between 1911 and 1914 as E136, while those from 1915 to 1938 were labeled E137. The 1912 Zeenut baseball card collection stood out for its quality, displaying sepia-toned player photographs on the card fronts. Featuring 159 players from six Pacific Coast League teams—Los Angeles Angels, Portland Beavers, Oakland Oaks, Sacramento Sacts, San Francisco Seals, and Vernon Tigers—the set measured a substantial 2-1/8” x 4-1/16”, making it the largest ever produced by the company.
