Description: Part One: “A single section of this part— 14 pages out of 50 tells you about materials, how to select and handle them and how to set colors. It is worth the price of the Course to any woman.” Part Two: “Perfect fitting one-piece dresses — a mystery of construction to the average woman — are a joy to make when you have the simple pattern this part teaches you how to draft in a few minutes.” Part Three: “You are enthusiastic over the progress you are making when you strike this lesson. For here the cutting and fitting of circular skirts and kimono waists become simple, easy operations.” Part Four: “By this time you are able to draft, fit, and make any simple house dress, waist, or skirt. Did you ever dream you could learn all this in six fascinating lessons?” The Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences in Scranton, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1916 by Mary Brooks Picken. The school combined correspondence courses with classroom instruction in dressmaking, millinery, cooking, fashion design, beauty, and homemaking. During the 1920s it become the world's largest women's long distance educational institution. The Institute closed in 1938. The courses provided a means for professional advancement, allowing women to study as their schedules allowed and at a lower cost than in-person instruction. The lessons were mailed to each student, who then had to pass a test before progressing. Some of the lessons required that the student submit a sample of sewn work. Students could submit questions about a lesson by mail and get a reply from one of the teachers. The publication covers a wide range of topics. See the pictures for a table of contents. The items are antique and made of paper, so discoloration and fading are present. The edges and corners are worn in some places. The binding is soft bound in printed paper wrap and is stapled together. Pencil marks from notes exist on some pages. There is some discoloration on the front and rear covers. Photos are part of the description and represent only a portion of the pages from the booklet, so please review for condition details. Additional pictures can be requested.
