Additional Information This iconic image of the grandfather of modern surfing, Duke Kahanamoku, is one of the earliest photographs of the ancient sport that dates back to ancient Polynesian and Hawaiian culture. Born in 1890, Kahanamoku spent his childhood honing his surfing and swimming skills in Waikiki, which has now become known for its tourism and iconic beaches. A native Hawaiian, Duke Kahanamoku would go on to win 5 Olympic gold medals in swimming. He is also credited with bringing surf culture across the globe in his travels, where he would demonstrate his skills to amazed locals.  This image remains one of his most enduring photographs and shows Duke riding a large wooden surfboard that would have been the equipment available at the time. As his travels took him around the world, he broke social barriers regarding segregated beaches. There are numerous memorials and statues constructed worldwide in Duke's honor, and he remains one of Hawaii's most enduring legends. Hawaii's distinct culture and connection to the ocean atmosphere have inspired people around the globe to learn the so-called "Sport of Kings," which references traditional Hawaiian culture where the nobility practiced surfing alongside the ordinary person. This photo immediately transports the viewer back in time and gives them a sense of the motion and fluidity associated with riding waves. Duke's iconic stance would go on to inspire numerous generations to follow in his footsteps and create a culture and lifestyle that would influence much of western culture.
