Description: This week I'm offering a number of old non-sport cards from various vintage sets. In 1935, an enterprising Hollywood publicity agent named Eugene N. Orovitz got the bright idea of selling 8x10 black and white photos of movie stars to the public on a subscription plan. He had access to glamour photos of actors and actresses that the movie studios provided for free – these photos would reference the star’s current movie in the caption, so it was a win-win for everyone. The photos were sold in groups of 12 per month, for a price of 25 cents (which admittedly was a lot of money for the depths of the Depression). The photos were printed on very high quality paper, textured to look like linen, giving the pieces in this series a distinctive appearance. All the stars of the mid-Thirties are here, such as Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, Myrna Loy and others. By the time this issue ran its course a few years later, well over 200 different photos had been issued, with many stars existing with more than one movie listed in the caption. The photos were also offered as a mail-in premium by a gum company, so they’re classified in the hobby catalogues under the “R” category. By the way, Orovitz had a son who later became a successful actor years later – as “Michael Landon.” This photo features actress Margot Grahame, starring in "Three Musketeers." It's in generally nice shape (see scan for condition), not too bad for an item that's ninety years old. This would be a terrific addition to any collection! Shipping will be combined for multiple purchases. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
