Description: 1934 news poster: a chimpanzee aerialist! This is a rare Illustrated Current News poster, dated June 25, 1934. It measures 12.5 x 19 inches in size. Printed on glossy paper, it is in attractive, very fine condition, with four thumbtack perforations in its blank left margin, plus two old fold lines, as originally issued. (These Illustrated Current News posters were published 3 times a week. They were folded into quarters when they were mailed to subscribers, which were typically stores or newsstands which displayed them for viewing by their customers.) The poster presents an animal stunt act, showing a dressed in a skirt, blouse and funny hat, and carrying a parasol as she walks a tightrope. The posters title and caption explains: A SIMIAN WIRE ARTIST IN ACTION Pasadena Cal. Betty, an eight-year-old African chimpanzee, holds the distinction of being the only trained simian wire artist who performs on a ten foot high slack and tight wire. She is owned by Mrs. Madeline Beckwith of Pasadena, famous monkey owner and trainer, who captured Betty at the age of five months on a trip that she made into the African Congo. The poster has the National Recovery Administration eagle symbol in its bottom left corner, with the slogan, NRA Member - U.S. - We Do Our Part.
