Special Notice: News Caption: The British Admiralty reported Dec. 6 a long range encounter in the South Atlantic between the British armed merchant cruiser Carnarvon Castle and a German Q-Boat. Dec. 6, 1940. The news caption does not mention the ship the Carnarvon Castle fought but it was the German Auxiliary Cruiser Thor. Carnarvon Castle got the worst end of it but made it to Montevideo for repairs. Some of the plating from Graf Spee was used to repair her. She was refitted in 1937-1938 and was requisitioned as a cruiser in 1939.
