Undated, these were issued in 1947. “French Equatorial Africa” was a federation of French Colonial Territories in Equatorial Africa, consisting of Gabon, French Congo, Ubangi-Shari, and Chad. Established in 1910, its administration was based in Brazzaville. In 1958, the federation was disestablished. In 1960, the former territories of Ubangi-Shari and Chad became the “Central African Republic” and the “Republic of Chad”. The Middle Congo became the Congo Republic, now the “Republic of the Congo”, and Gabon became the “Republic of Gabon”. His travels in the Pacific Ocean led to the discovery of several islands. Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea and the Bougainvillea flower are named in his honor.
