Description: Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. Seven of Joe Brown's collection of 2,500 political campaign items are shown here. The W.H. Harrison ribbon in the center is one that was worn by Lewis Cass in the presidential campaign of 1840. At the time he was governor of the Michigan territory; which included Wisconsin. The lamb pin was the symbol used by Benjamin Harrison in 1888 to signify purity of his plan to protect American industry by the use of high traffic rates. The rooster lapel pin stood for Winfield S. Hancock when he ran against Garfield in 1880. The chief issue of the 1896 campaign was the money standard, gold versus silver. McKinley stood for the gold standard and his campaigners got out a gold bug (upper right). The wings folded in, but by pressing the bug's tail the wings would fly out and show pictures of McKinley and Garrett A. Hobart, his running mate. The Republicans also got out a silly picture of Bryan (below bug) with the saying, "In God we trust for the other 47 cents." A "gold" rough riders hat was a campaign symbol in Teddy Roosevelt's first campaign. There's no need to comment on the two bottom buttons. Brown is a student at Marquette University.
