Lincoln Wheat & Memorial Cent - Background & Design: The Lincoln wheat cent was introduced in 1909 and minted each year until 1958 with the “wheat ears” reverse design. This represented the first U.S. coin issued for general circulation to depict the likeness of an actual person, as all previous series had depicted various renderings of Liberty. The obverse depicts the familiar likeness of President Abraham Lincoln, while the reverse depicts two stalks of wheat. The Lincoln Memorial cent was introduced in 1959 and minted each year until 2008 when the "Union Shield" design was created and implemented. The “Lincoln Memorial” penny design was introduced in 1959. This design was last made in 2008 and replaced by the Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Program. The obverse design featuring President Abraham Lincoln was first produced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth.
