Description: 1968 and 1969 NEW YORK METS Now on DVD! One of the ultimate Mets collectibles, the original 1968 and 1969 New York Mets highlight films, “Year of the Mets Pitchers” and “Look Who’s #1!” have recently been restored to digital DVD by Rare Sportsfilms! The full-color 55-minute DVD is narrated by the old voice of the Mets, Lindsey Nelson, and shows the highlights of those two memorable years in which (1969) the Mets surprised the odds makers and the sports world by not only finishing first in the new N.L. Eastern Division and sweeping the Atlanta Braves in the first N.L. Championship Series, but also polishing off the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in a five-game World Series! The DVD begins with the highlights of the 1968 season, then shows the 1969 film, “Look Who’s #1!” 1969 shows the Expos game at Shea Stadium September 10 when the Mets beat Montreal in extra innings to go into first place for the first time in their 8-year history! After Manager of The Year Gil Hodges gives his reasons for the Mets success in ’69, the players are shown in action: Tommie Agee, Bud Harrelson, Rod Gaspar, Ken Boswell, Wayne Garrett, Ed Charles, Bobby Pfeil, Jerry Grote, Donn Clendenon, Cleon Jones, Art Shamsky, Ron Taylor, Tug McGraw, Jerry Koosman, 25 game-winner Tom Seaver, Gary Gentry, Jim McAndrew, Al Weis, Nolan Ryan, Ron Swoboda and others. The turning point of the season comes against Ferguson Jenkins and the Cubs July 8. With Chicago leading 3-1 in the 9th, Cub outfielder Don Young misjudges a fly ball, and Clendenon’s double ties the game 3-3! When Ed Kranepool’s bloop hit wins it, the Mets’ three run 9th has beaten the Eastern division leading Cubs 4-3! The next night, in front of the largest Mets crowd so far in ’69, Tom Seaver comes within two outs of a perfect game, when Jim Qualls’ clean hit breaks up the masterpiece. Special Days throughout the season are highlighted, such as Banner Day, Old Timers Day, The Mayor’s Trophy Game vs. the Yankees and Family Day that included the annual Father-Son game. Some scenes from the ’69 All-Star Game at Washington are included. Who can forget those wild September games against the Cubs? On September 8, Agee gets knocked down at the plate by Cub pitcher Billy Hands and next inning Ron Santo takes one on the wrist while batting against Koosman. Agee smacks a homer, a black cat runs across the field in front of the Cubs dugout, and catcher Randy Hundley is hopping mad at home plate after missing a tag play. In all, Koosman strikes out 13 on the way to a big Mets win. Next night, Fergie Jenkins pitches for the Cubs. Shamsky is caught in a rundown but escapes when the Cubs mess up the play. In this game, Clendenon and Shamsky hit homers to beat Chicago again. When the Cubs leave New York, their lead is down to only a half game over the on-rushing Mets. As seen at the beginning of the tape, the next night the Mets beat the Expos in a doubleheader while the Cubs lose again and the Mets are now in first place to stay! The rest of the DVD covers the fabulous season-ending saga of the Mets. Behind the pitching of Gentry and Clendenon’s three-run homer, they clinch the N.L. East on Sept. 24 against the defending champion Cardinals at Shea Stadium (clubhouse celebration shown). Game three of the N.L. Championship Series vs. Atlanta is shown, as the Braves are swept after game three at Shea Stadium (another clubhouse celebration). Highlights are also shown of every game of the World Series vs. Baltimore, including Agee’s two great catches in game 3 and Ron Swoboda’s catch in game 4.
