Description: A special 1976 Bicentennial three-coin set features proof examples of the historic Washington quarter, Kennedy half dollar, and Eisenhower dollar. The coins, with a mirror-like proof finish, were struck by the San Francisco Mint, and therefore, each coin is marked with an 'S.' A proof coin, made with a specially polished and treated die, is created for collectors and never intended for circulation. The Eisenhower bicentennial silver dollar proof is one of 4 million coins produced for the 11 million uncirculated 1976-S 40% silver dollars in 1976. The United States Mint began minting these coins in 1975 to mark the upcoming 200th birthday of the nation on July 4, 1976. In honor of this occasion, the back of the coin features the Liberty Bell superimposed over a full moon. There were two varieties of this coin produced by the U.S. Mint. In Variety I of these special proof coins, the "R" of the word "DOLLAR" had a straight tail and bore a thick sans serif font to the writing. In Variety II, the "R" of "DOLLAR" is curved, and the writing has a thin serif font. The type contained in these 1976 Bicentennial 3-piece Silver US Proof Sets, like all uncirculated silver proofs of this coin, is Variety I. The Kennedy bicentennial silver half dollar features John F. Kennedy on the front. On the back, it features Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the United States Constitution was formed and adopted. This was a special design by American sculptor Seth G. Huntington. It was chosen via a competition held by the U.S. Mint, and this version of the coin was issued in 1975 and 1976. The Washington bicentennial silver quarter features a special reverse design in honor of the historic occasion as well. This one shows a colonial drummer. Beside his profile is a victory torch encircled by 13 stars. The design for the reverse of these historic quarters was also selected from the United States Mint's competition from the entry by Jack L. Ahr.On each of these coins, the date range 1776-1976 appears beneath the depicted president's profile. Each of the three coins contains 40% silver for a fineness of .400, and each has a silver content of 0.5379 troy ounces. The mint originally sold these piece sets directly through 1986.The set comes in an attractive bi-fold red, white, and blue presentation album. Each of the coins in this set is sealed in its own clear, two-piece plastic case. The coins are separated from one another by raised plastic rings. A paper insert covered in red felt adds a sharp aesthetic accent. The case of coins is then set into a molded frame of black plastic featuring raised letters in silver reading "UNITED STATES PROOF SET." A hinged flap can be flipped over to make for a sharp display. The clear plastic case and black plastic frame are then protected by a black card cover that has the phrase "United States Proof Set • 1976" imprinted in silver letterin
