Description: 1982 Australian Animals Series II - Reptiles & Amphibians - Stamp pack Amphibians and reptiles are the subjects shown on the second series of Australian Animals stamps. All amphibians and reptiles are vertebrates (ie with a backbone). They are also cold-blooded animals. Cold-blooded animals cannot regulate their body temperature and must rely on their surroundings for warmth. During the winter months, most amphibians and reptiles living in the colder regions of Australia become torpid. They remain in this sluggish, sometimes dormant, state until the temperature begins to rise again in Spring.Amphibians lay their eggs in water. Tadpoles are hatched from the unshelled, jelly-like eggs. and must undergo a metamorphosis before becoming air-breathing adults. The amphibians in this series are represented by the Blue Mountains Tree Frog and the Corroboree Frog.Reptiles either lay eggs enclosed in shell or else they produce live young. The newly born young are essentially replicas of their parents. Those reptiles shown in the series are the Yellow-faced Whip Snake, the Freshwater Crocodile, the Smooth Knob-tailed Gecko, the Eastern Water Dragon and the Eastern snake-necked Tortoise (sometimes known as the Long-necked Tortoise).
