Description: For sale is a splendid and very charming 19th century Connecticut landscape painting. The painting came from a private estate in Connecticut. The painting is signed in the lower right hand corner. What we can make out is Gibson. We believe it is for New York Connecticut artist William Hamilton Gibson (1850 - 1896) who along with Thoreau and Burroughs, came to be regarded as one of the three most influential nature writers of the time. He was a naturalist writer and fine art artist. Most of his paintings were watercolors, but he did execute some very well done tonalist Connecticut landscapes in oil paint. We have included one in our picture section for your consideration. These glowing atmospheric paintings would later be captured by American artists Julian Onderdonk as well as Bruce Crane and many artists of the Tonalist School of painters in America. The influence coming from the French Barbizon school and adaoted by these artist for American landscapes. (SEE OUR PICS FOR A SIMILAR WORK BY ONDERDONK) This landscape looks like it is an early morning sunrise in Autumn. The colors of the trees are turning with the early colors and hues of Fall. The gorgeous glowing golden rays of sun dancing off of the low hanging clouds creates a warm glowing atmosphere engulfing the landscape. The painting is float mounted on matting board in a period frame but the way the mounting is set we are not sure if the frame is original to the painting. Overall it's a lovely package. But we do recommend getting a gold gilded deep fluted cove Hudson River School picture frame to display to maximize this wonderful paintings potential. Oil on hard stock. Circa 1880 in age. Age appropriate wear to the painting but overall in good condition. The painting itself needs a professional cleaning but maintains a lovely original antique surface. The surface is in fine condition but there is age related grime soiling, and perhaps smoke buildup over the last 150 years or so. So a professional cleaning would be advised to really bring out the deep colorations in the oil paint. ***NOTE: OUR PICTURES WERE TAKEN OUTDOORS IN NATURAL SUNLIGHT. THE PAINTING IS DARKER IN COLOR INDOORS**** Hi definition cameras tend to pull more color from the painting. Once cleaned, if so desired, These colors will be much more vibrant. Also, please look closely at our close-up detailed pictures of the signature. We are making an attribution to this painting, but we are uncertain if that is 100%. Therefore, we sell this painting as a 19th century Connecticut tonallist landscape painting signed Gibson Measurements Framed - 10" x 13" Painting - 5" x 7"
