Description: This listing is for a superb impressionistic academic drawing of a standing youth playing the flute by painter Paul-Joseph Barian (1875–1942), who studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) and Alexandre Leleu (1871–1937) at the École des Beaux-Arts. The drawing is executed in charcoal on laid watermarked paper. Barian was a talented draftsman who thrived under Gérôme's teaching and this drawing is a rare example of his student work. The artist would have been around 20 years old when it was made. This study will be featured in my forthcoming catalog focused on themes of youth. If you would like a PDF copy when the catalog is complete, please reach out. Drawing measures approximately 18 3/4”w x 24 1/4”h. The sheet is in overall good condition with light wear and surface imperfections. Note 1-3/4" tear at middle right, and small tear at top left. See images to verify condition and feel free to ask questions. Paul-Joseph Barian (1875–1942) - After completing his secondary education at the college of Meaux on a scholarship, Barian studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) and Alexandre Leleu (1871–1937). In addition to his career as a drawing teacher, Barian regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. His works included genre scenes, landscapes, and animal scenes, but he was particularly known for portraits of humble villagers. Barian eventually became the Director of the School of Decorative Arts in Roubaix. Towards the end of his life, he returned to Meaux and bequeathed a portion of his works to the Bossuet Museum.
