Description: This Listing is for ONE New Sheet of 20 x 37¢ American Advances in Aviation Stamps from 2005.MNH. Mint. No flaws. From a Smoke-free and Pet-free Environment. These self-adhesive 37¢ American Advances in Aviation stamps were issued by the U.S. Postal Service on July 29, 2005 in Oshkosh, WI and Vienna, VA. William S Phillips of Ashland, OR, an award-winning historical aviation and landscape artist, painted each of the stamp designs and the header. He was honored in 1986 with a one-man show of his work at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. Text on the back of the stamps gives historic information about each of the airplanes featured - two each - of ten different American airplanes. The two planes in the upper margin are the Hughes H1 racer (left) which set a transcontinental speed record in 1937, and a 1952 Boeing YB52 Stratofortress (right) - prototype for the still operational B52 bomber. The airplanes chosen for these stamps depict American innovations and technological contributions to military, commercial, and general aviation during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, and include the following:Boeing 247 - the first modern commercial passenger airplane, setting new standards in 1933.Consolidated Aircraft PBY Catalina - long-range flying boat, with retractable wingtip floats.Grumman Aircraft F6F Hellcat - WWII carrier-based fighter, easy to mass produce and maintain.Republic P47 Thunderbolt - both a high-altitude escort fighter and a low-level fighter-bomber.Ercoupe 415 - monoplane with a spin-proof linked control system and tricycle landing gear.Lockheed P80 Shooting Star - exceeded 500 miles per hour with laminar-wing flow.Consolidated B24 Liberator - long-range bomber, with retractable “roller-type” bomb bay doors.Boeing B29 Superfortress - long-range bomber, with remote-controlled gun turrets and pressurized crew compartments.Beechcraft 35 Bonanza - a very fast all-metal personal plane with a distinctive V-shaped tail.Northrop YB49 Flying Wing - a failed futuristic design with no fuselage or tail to minimize drag and maximize lift.
