The obverse features the personal monogram of the emperor, blended with the octagon shape of the dome of the Aachen Cathedral, where Charlemagne was buried in 814. The inscriptions say KARL DER GROßE (Charlemagne/Charles the Great), and 748-814 The reverse shows the standard eurozone design for the two-euro coins; the numeral 2 superimposed over a map depicting Europe, created by Belgian artist Luc Luycx.
