The historic campaign was unusual in that the Germans won again and agian at the tactical level, but suffered terrible defeats strategically. The centerpiece of th fighting was the struggle for the Dnepr River line. There the Germans hoped ot once and for all stop the Soviet steamroller in front of their "Wotan Line" positions. Hitler promised every soldier in the army group the iron cross if the river were held. Stalin awarded thousands of "Hero" medals to the first Red Army units across. The game is one of relentless pressure westward from the Soviet. The Germans, however, cannot fight a passive defense and hope to win. Time and again, he must pull his panzer units together and stage savage counterattacks aimed at pinching off Red spearheads or digging out trapped German units.
