Rooted slips (plugs) are available in the store and are the best option for getting your sweet potatoes off to a great start. However, it becomes expensive if you want several sweet potato plants. This is the least expensive way to start growing sweet potatoes. You will receive - your choice of 5, 25, 50 or 100 vine cuttings. During checkout you will be prompted to pick the varieties of sweet potato slips you would like to receive. You may choose a single variety (ex. 5 boniato) or any combination of the sweet potato slips listed below. The total number of slips chosen must match the number of slips you chose. When they arrive they will look very sad because they are unrooted. I will remove some of the leaves, but those that remain will be wilted and may turn yellow. As long as the stem is green and healthy the cutting has a great chance of surviving. Place the cuttings in water for a few days in a shaded area away from direct sunlight. When You see roots appearing on the cuttings they are ready to transplant into their new home. Sweet potatoes enjoy full sun but your young plant should protected from direct sunlight for the first few days. I usually just throw a leafy branch over the start, but it will appreciate any shade that you provide. They can be grown in pots but will produce more abundantly when planted in the ground, in well drained, rich, organic soil and full sun to partial shade. Potato vines can be quite long and cover a considerable amount of space in your garden. If space is limited then plant the potatoes next to a fence or some other trellis so that there is a place for the vines to grow.
