Description: This Modern Library book, #155.3 in the series, Walden by Henry David Thoreau, includes an introduction by Brooks Atkinson. From the front flap: “To collect the representative writings of Henry David Thoreau within a volume of seven hundred and fifty pages has long been the ambition of the directors of the Modern Library. Now that ambition has been fulfilled, thanks to the selection made by the editor, Brooks Atkinson, who also contributes a penetrating critical and biographical introduction. This volume contains, besides Walden, complete and unabridged, the essays Civil Disobedience, Slavery in Massachusetts, A Pleas for Captain Joh Brown, Life Without Principle and many of the famous nature studies.” 732 pages plus lists of both regular and Giant Modern Library editions. The book has a Toledano 14 cover, F or blank endpapers, and an o jacket. The copyright page states “MODERN LIBRARY EDITION, September 1937” and “Renewed 1965, by Random House, Inc.” The jacket inverse does not list titles, but the ISBN number on the back panel indicates it was printed around 1970.This used book has bright gilt and a clean cover. Fanning the pages, I see they are no longer bright white, but are slightly tan. I have seen this in a number of early 1970 ML printings. It has a firm binding, no underlining or marginalia, and no offensive odor. Top 1/4” of the front free endpaper appears to have been cut off. The unclipped dust jacket ($2.95) is otherwise complete with no chips but with light edge wear and light rubbing. See photos. On eBay (search: "Modern Library" "Walden") there are four copies with this jacket starting at at $14.99. On ABE, there are no copies with this later jacket.
