Thanks for all the Kudos! Tony!!HARDWARE: As much as possible, I always use actual FENDER O.E.M hardware. I enjoy replicating older types of vintage fender guitars and being true to the hardware. Such as rounded screws heads for modern strats/teles and larger counter sunk pickup screws & counter sunk 5 way switch screws and rubber spacers on the pickups for vintage strats/teles. I use Fender Relic'd vintage tuners with Kluson bushing adapters where needed. All my jacks are top-notch Switchcraft, jack plates by Fender. My switches are upgraded and vintage style CRL spring loaded, or Fender Oaks Grisby. All my neck plates are custom upgraded, my butterfly string trees have white relic'd plastic spacers and strap buttons are Fender. "Fender Vintage Series" bridges and Fender saddles. I always include appropriate Allen adjustments wrenches for the saddles and truss rods. The knobs and control plate are true Fender chrome relic pick up cover came with the pickups and aged as well. The switch tip worn, and the pickguard is Relic'd, period correct for the year. The darkening and shadowing of the pickguard itself can take over an hour, and done matched up to real vintage guards. All are relic’d by me and aged to just the right look, then all hardware is lubed for function. The artistry is in the details. BODY: This body has been custom painted, then relic’d to show my version of the "62 Telecaster Custom Heavy Relic 3-Tone." This body comes from my friends at USA Custom Guitars and was cut to vintage style measurements from original 50-60’s body specifications. The top and bottom horns, the shoulder arm and belly cuts are correct. These are hand built just like the original at the Fender Factory. Handed glued, machine cut and edge routed, then hand sanded and smoothed. I choose each one based on grain, pieces and weight.Specs:Wood: Alder Pieces: 3Routing: Neck and Controls Bridge: Vintage Drilled Hole After receiving the body, I fill all blemishes, seal it, sand and smooth. Lots of wet sanding going on here during the prep. First, after sanding multiple times, with multiple grits, I spray a clear sealer on it and wet sand it again. The body is painted with an 100% nitrocellulose from Gracey’s Vintage Finishes. First, this is not a STENCIL. Each job is unique. I then paint it with an aged vintage 100% nitrocellulose 3-Tone SUNBURST, Amber, Red and Black finish - paint by Gracey’s Vintage Finishes. I reduce the Red color by 50% to give it an aged look. In most vintage 3-tone sunbursts, the red color is minimal as it fades into amber over the years. Once the basic color is laid down, I start my relic work. I spent many, many hour's chipping, scraping, tinting and detailing the front, back, edges and horns, then re-relicing it to my satisfaction. Constantly checking against photos and updating my work until I'm satisfied. I take great care in getting the relic on the front and back to be as close, and thick as possible as you can see by the photos. This is a week's long process, not days. I relic the shoulder, as well as the lower horn edges where you would get case burn as well as heavy cutting on the back to mimic heavy belt rash (back) and hand strumming wear (front), as well as the lower edges where you would get case burn. Lastly, I add some scuffing and nitro Nitro tints to it to mimic body sweat and hand oils, then added a last topcoat of clear nitro to seal it. I then do the final super fine sanding, multiple times prepping for buffing it and finally hand buffing it to a vintage shine. ELECTRONICS: This is the "HEART" of the instrument. My electronics are also designed to replicate the vintage “Loaded Pick Guard” style, look and sound with upgraded & more expensive pots, switch, vintage load capacitors, wiring, cream paper masking tape, shielding& gripper washers. All wiring is done with cloth push back, pre tinned vintage wire as well. It's a custom hand built vintage style with perfect function. Genuine Fender® American Vintage '62 Telecaster Custom NECK Pickup (005-6074-049). The same pickup used on the American Vintage Series '62 Custom Telecaster. This neck pickup sports a traditional chrome plated cover, relic’d, dark enamel magnet wire, alnico magnets and period correct cloth covered output leads. They are also wax potted and built with cloth wiring and black fiber bobbin construction, aged pickup cover, vintage correct mounting screws & vintage pickup height adjustment tubing. Genuine Fender® American Vintage '62 Tele® Custom BRIDGE Pickup (PN 0056075000). Bridge pickup has '60s style staggered pole pieces. Low E, A, B and high E are all the same height, G is raised somewhat more & D is the highest. Other bridge pickup features include wax coated white string wrap around the coil and vintage style cloth insulated output leads. Also, on this guitar, the 62 bridge pickup has the famous copper bridge plate. It’s to eliminate any microphonic feedback and providing a slight BOOST in volume and power. It's purpose is to fatten up the tone (by increasing the inductance of the pickup), and attenuates the highs, as per vintage Telecasters. The Neck pickup measures 6.81 Ω on the meter and the bridge pickup measures 7.81 Ω and the inductance is 2.6 Henries * It has upgraded new Seymour Duncan Bourns Smooth Taper 250K Split Shaft Speed Pots on the volume and tone. If you haven't tried these, you'll be very pleased. They are called "Speed Pots" because they can be easily and speedily adjusted with your little finger as you play. The wires are full length and have no splices. The Wiring Harness is done to complete vintage specifications with the same parts as the AV/RI original. They are matched with a new upgraded premium Fender Custom Shop 4-Way Tele-Mod Pickup Switch, 099-2250-000. Used on Custom Shop instruments, this four-way pickup selector switch allows you to change your Telecaster's pickup wiring from Series to Parallel wiring for increased output and a fatter tone with the flick of a switch. I love that in between position! * Also, the capacitor is a Fender period correct NOS Red Sprague .1mfd Guitar Cap. This is shielded with vintage style yellow tubing. Caps don't add tone, they allow for a wider range of "Warmth" to be added, giving you more tone distinctions as you adjust your knobs.NECK: This is where your "Hands" make the magic happen. I ensure all my necks replicate the “Vintage Look and Feel” of early Fender guitars. Of course, the look is important, but the "Feel" is more important, and that's why I ensure the final neck is smooth and polished and that all of the fret ends have all been smoothed down and the frets leveled and polished. This neck has a "Naked" back, as all 60's pre-CBS necks did. Tuners: Fender Road Worn String Tree: Spaghetti Relic Truss Rod location: Heel Heel width: 2 & 3/16 in1st Fret: 0.86 in. 12th Fret: 0.96 in. * It has a new hand-cut Nut, aged butterfly string tree with aged plastic spacer and the Tuners are Fender Road worn vintage - Kluson style. * It came to me naked and unfinished. After multiple sanding’s, I custom hand relic my necks to mimic the actual areas of years of playing. I dis-like the unnatural sanded down GRAY that most custom shops do, with hand break lines at the 2nd & 13th frets. I've researched hundreds of actual vintage necks and found that the hand wear flows mostly on the underside of the neck, and not in the center. I use my nitro tints, laying down my "Secret Sauce" Vintage / Tinting and relic'ing techniques, allowing me to replicate the dark weathered Amber and Brown, mimicking years of hand oils and rubbing. With several more coats of Nitro, then buffing. * I also RESHAPE my necks to be as accurate to vintage spec with regards to having completely smooth contours on the back of the neck, as do the early 60’s Fender Stratocaster Necks (See Photo # ). On this neck, I’ve reshaped both the back of the headstock where your hand meets the head, and the beginning of the heel, where your hand meets the heel hump - Smoothness with functionality for vintage comfort.* I also don't like the "STICKY" feel of fresh Nitro, so after the final polishing and shine I smooth back of the neck to a "MATT" finish. I do this by gently using 0000 steel wool all over the back of the neck. This idea came from a customer, and I agreed so much I'm now doing it on all my necks that I sell. It's easily reversed to a gloss shine by rubbing it down with "MEGUIARS" ultimate compound. This is what I use for my final polish. * I added airbrushing the Headstock Darker, to my repertoire. I've got several mid-sixties original Fenders with naturally dark headstocks, and love what the custom shop has done with many of theirs. The darkened areas around the tuners and edges are done by me and my "Paasche H model" airbrush. My added artist touches. This simulates many years of UV, Smoke and Tuner metal leakage into the nitrocellulose and darkening the nitro around the tuners and edges. I then spray a few coats of clear with nitro, fine sand and buff. All good! Each neck has several hours of work into it. * On this one I inlaid CLAY dots to replicate actual 62 original vintage dots. This is no simple process. First, I remove the old dots carefully, then glue and insert the new clay dots, let them sit. Then the next day I come in and carefully remove the tops, then them sand down multiple times before flushing smooth the surface of the dots and fretboard, then rubbing them out with oils. It's over a 4-hour process, reserved for request or on my high-end guitars. I always setup the neck (truss rod), frets and strings to minimize the string height and fret buzz while keeping the neck as straight as allowed. Occasionally, I use brass neck spacers to ensure correct neck angle for string height & proper neck alignment. The neck plays low and easy, with a completely new setup to an average string height of 1/16 at the 12th fret. I've added new Ernie Ball super slinky .09 strings, and then completed a saddle/bridge adjustment for perfect string height and playability. I always include appropriate Allen adjustments wrenches for the saddles and truss rods.I’m a Wounded Warrior and have been rescuing and rebuilding guitars for the last ten years, as a form of therapy.
