He graduated from Split in 1926 , and graduated in French language , comparative history of literature and Yugoslav literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade in 1930 . He studied in Rome , Munich and Padua , where he received his doctorate in 1931 with the thesis La fortuna di Dante nella letteratura serbocroata . In 1926-1927, he assisted in the direction of Branko Gavella at the Serbian National Theater in Belgrade. He stayed in Paris intermittently from 1926 and continuously from 1936 to 1938. He was a high school teacher in Zagreb and Karlovac from 1933 to 1936 and from 1938 to 1939, then a dramatist at the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb from 1939 to 1941. He was the founder of the Acting School of the Croatian National Theater. During the Second World War, he was the manager of the Central Theater Company at ZAVNOH , head of the partisan acting school in Glina and director of the drama Theater of the National Liberation of Croatia. He was the director and teacher of the National Acting School in Zagreb from 1945 to 1949, assistant professor from 1950, and associate professor from 1956 to 1959 at the Academy of Theater Arts in Zagreb . From his retirement, in 1960, until 1963, he was the secretary of the DHK , and from 1965 to 1967, the chief editor of the "Knowledge" publishing house.
