Description: ALFREDO SOSABRAVO. Engraving. Serigraphy/Cardboard. Contemporary art. Cuban art. Cuba - 1930 • Title: Untitled • Technique: Serigraphy/Cardboard, 30/75 • Dimensions: (16 x 13 inches) 18 ½ x 15 inches • Executed: 2016 • Signed: Sosa bravo PROVENANCE Private collection, Havana, acquired from the original owner by the current owner. Ceramist, painter, and engraver. He bestowed a sculptural character to ceramics with his personal touch. He is one of the most important artists in the history of Cuban art. In 1950, upon seeing Wifredo Lam's paintings, he began painting as a hobby until enrolling in the evening course at the Annex School of the San Alejandro Academy between 1955 and 1957. These were the only years of formal training he had, but his friend Ángel Acosta León guided him in the profound learning of painting and later in engraving. Over the next five years, he painted and made woodcuts, receiving successive awards in the latter. He was appointed a member of the Cuban Printmakers Association and taught various drawing and engraving courses at the National School of Art Instructors. His skillful craftsmanship, the casual manner in which he addressed the drama of the contemporary world, and his unique way of working with collage—embedding fabrics with actual stitches, painting arrows and popular phrases—became a distinctive hallmark of his work. This serigraphy on cardboard faithfully encapsulates the visual poetry of this great artist.ALFREDO SOSABRAVO. Grabado. Serigrafía / Cartulina. Arte contemporáneo. Arte Cubano.
