Description: AUTHOR'S NOTE This book has certain purposeful shortcomings, whose presence makes this brief explanation necessary. All material quoted herein is from newspapers. The stories furnished their readers by those newspapers were prepared in great haste, and consequently often contained inaccuracie The author feels that in presenting this collection it would be presumptuous to burden its text with corrective footnotes, on the theory that the errors themselves are a badge of authen- ticity. Therefore, in its factual detail, this book is not to be regarded as reliable. The quoted material has been edited only by the correction of obviously typographical errors and by condensation. Two questions governed the selection of the individual hap- penings described: "Was it news?" and "Was it interesting?" In answering yes to both, it became necessary to treat history very shabbily: many significant events are ignored because of their failure to furnish exciting first copy. In addition, the matter of space required a ruthlessness of selection. Many readers no doubt will be disappointed that stories they know are not represented to such readers, the author can say only that their regret is but a fraction of his own. To another possible criticism-that the contents of this book are bloody- the response is that ours has been a bloody history, and blood often makes the best Extras. Finally, the author would suggest that this work be read as a scrapbook-as the sort of book an inveterate reader of newspapers who lived in three centuries might have compiled
