Description: Many of these have been sold as “opium” bottles. It’s true that the shape and size indicate that possibility. This concoction was a secret Dutch family recipe that was closely guarded from the 1600s. The family name was Tilly and the product was called Haarlem oil. The recipe of genuine Haarlem oil is a securely kept secret consisting of ingredients such as sulfur and terebinth oil. The remedy has been used and still is being used by people who are convinced of its healing and purifying effect. People find that Haarlem oil is effective in the curing of wounds and as a disinfectant. It is also said to have a positive effect on the kidneys and urinary tract. The advertising claimed it cured just about everything: this preparation has (for hundreds of years) been used by the medical profession for the relief and cure of all diseases having their origin in the kidneys and bladder. They are the most Rational remedies that can be used for any of these complaints, because of their soothing and healing effect on the whole urinary tract. They also act as an antiseptic and prophylactic in their passage through the stomach and bowels and thereby purify the whole system. It was probably good stuff, but I can’t state for sure that it contained opium or morphine. This is a wonderful little bottle in light aqua standing 3 ½” tall and ½” round. It is crudely made and wobbles trying to stand up. It is boldly embossed “GDE KONING TILLY” with a crude neck that is not at all straight and ends with no real lip. These are from the late 1890s. This one is shiny clean with no damage.
