Nathan Clark Sr., who started the company, was born in 1787 in Cornwall, Orange, New York. He established Athens Pottery Works in Athens, NY in 1809. The business was very successful, becoming a leader in pottery manufacturing in New York around the turn of the 19th Century. Nathan’s Brother Edward Clark, together with Isaac Singer, founded the Singer Sewing Machine Company and became one of the richest men in America. About the manufacturing - Salt-glaze Stoneware is made by throwing in a large amount of salt into the kiln at over 2000 degrees. The high heat would cause the salt to vaporize and coat the pottery with a rough, glossy coating It's decorated with Cobalt Oxide because it withstands the heat of firing and keeps its rich, blue color. We see these beautiful, blue designs hand painted on almost all decorated, salt-glazed stoneware. The surface of the piece has a rough “Orange Peel” texture that tells us it’s salt-glazed, newer replicas will have a smoother texture. See Pictures for details, and please ask me any questions you may have.
