Description: AUTHENTIC NGERE-WOBE MASK, IVORY COAST, AFRICA For your consideration is this large and impressive mask, created to frighten the viewer and carved with projecting tubular eyes enhanced by metal rims, an attenuated nose and the open mouth exposes a row of metal teeth. The mask is decorated with red cloth, six cowry shells, nails, hide remnants and the perimeter is heavily padded with cloth. We carvers created powerful masks to which shells, nails, hide and fabric were added to intensify the masks’ power. This extraordinary old mask possesses stylistic elements used by both the N’gere and Wobe carvers, grouped together by ethnologists and called “We”. Both groups undertook frequent masquerades and the distinctive masks used in these ceremonies were owned by ranking families.
